Hennadii is a man who fought: first with the russian occupiers against the annexation of Crimea, then – for the release of Ukrainian political prisoners, and later – for all of us at the front line. A man who survived 767 days of russian captivity and died fighting for Ukraine.

We ask you to support the petition to award the honorary title of Hero of Ukraine (posthumously) to Hennadii Afanasiev!

After gaining freedom as a result of an exchange in 2016, Hennadii became one of the leaders of the movement for the release of Ukrainian political prisoners. Hennadii on his own developed and taught free IT courses for ATO veterans and their families to help them socialize after the war and acquire a new highly paid profession.

On February 24, 2022, without waiting for a call-up, Hennadii signed up as a volunteer. Among his brothers in arms, he received the call sign “Thor” in honor of the Scandinavian god of thunder and lightning. On December 18, 2022, the 32-year-old Defender of Ukraine perished in the Luhansk region near Bilohorivka. He was posthumously awarded the Order for Courage, III class.

Hennadii Afanasiev is a man of honor and courage, a soldier who has become a model of strength of spirit for many. Hennadii Afanasiev's courage, fortitude and life path deserve the highest state award – Hero of Ukraine.

This petition has already been signed by over 10 000 Ukrainians! We very much hope that by February 27, the anniversary of the annexation of Crimea, we will collect 25000 signatures for the petition to be signed by the President!
