Between October and December 2025, the Organization’s team developed and launched a specialized database on the UWAZI platform to document testimonies of civilians who were unlawfully deprived of their liberty as a result of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine.
UWAZI is a specialized open-source platform for the systematic documentation, analysis, and publication of complex data sets, used by human rights organizations and research institutions worldwide. The transition to this platform marked a significant step forward for our organization, enabling us to structure documentation processes in line with international standards for information and evidence management, with a focus on reliability, security, and comprehensive data analysis.
The practical value of the new database and its further development are explained by Serhii Melnykovych, Research Coordinator at the Association of Relatives of Kremlin Political Prisoners:
"The database is now fully operational, and the transfer of previously collected testimonies is ongoing. This tool allows not only for the systematic storage of information, but also for its prompt analysis, enabling the identification of recurring patterns — including transfer routes, typical detention practices, and forms of persecution. In the long term, the database provides a foundation for broader and more effective cooperation with law enforcement agencies, state institutions, and other stakeholders who may use this data for investigations, advocacy, policy development, and the protection of victims’ rights, including in the context of holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring access to reparations".
